The masses have flocked to the Libre. It's known for its ability to crush big rides, carry tons of gear, perform jaw-dropping skids, and may or may not have been tested by wheelieing with one hand while holding a beer in the other. Who knows. Featuring our Carbon Verso fork with its multitude of carrying capabilities, the Libre is the more budget-friendly version of our badass gravel adventure bike. KONA 6061 ALUMINUM Kona 7005 and 6061 Aluminum alloys are used extensively throughout our fleet of mountain and asphalt bicycles. A tough, durable, light alloy, both Kona 7005 and 6061 deliver fantastic, reliable performance that lasts for thousands of rides. Much of our 7005/6061 tubing is butted and/or formed, meaning the tubing's wall thickness can be increased or decreased, as well as shaped, so we can fine-tune a particular frame's strength and ride characteristics depending on its intended application. INTERNAL HEADSET Bearing cups are actually pressed into the frame and are easily removable. An internal headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible. TAPERED HEAD TUBE More girth at the bottom of the head tube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself and eliminating brake shudder, while providing confident steering performance. The inherent strength of its triangular design also means a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain. A zero-stack, tapered head tube also puts strength where the load is going—into the lower headset cup—maximizing bearing durability where it's needed. TUBELESS COMPATIBLE RIMS Tubeless rims allow for tires with more puncture resistance; the ability to run lower tire pressure, which provides better tire grip on the trail; lower rolling resistance; and weight savings over traditional tube and tire systems. 12x142mm AXLE 12x142mm, 12x148 and 12x157 rear axle standards provide two major advantages to the Kona rider: the 12mm diameter of the rear axle provides the rear hub and frame with a stiff interface, while the 142/148/157mm outer diameter of the hub allows the wheel to be quickly and properly positioned in the frame before the rear axle is inserted. For 2017, you'll see the 12x148 Boost standard in the mix. Boost spacing provides more tire clearance at the chainstay yoke, while the rear wheel is stiffer and more durable relative to a 12x142 thru-axle.
The Libre CR is for the rider that knows exactly what they want in their gravel bike. You want a double ring for maximum gear range. You want easy-to-manage disc brakes. You want the ability to carry a ton of stuff, even if it's just an occasional need. You want that carbon frame and Verso carbon fork that is stiff, light, and tracks well over anything. You want all of this without breaking the bank. Bingo! We've got you covered. Whether bike packing, ripping the local gravel roads, or out on an epic summer-time century, the Libre CR is fast, efficient, and comfortable across any terrain. KONA CARBON Designed to be lightweight and built to demanding standards. Carbon fiber has long been praised for its weight and strength, but rather than chase grams, we place our efforts on the performance that is possible when the right high-modulus fibers are in the right places. Our designers work very closely with our manufacturer to ensure there is no compromise to the desired ride characteristics, durability and – finally – weight stipulations that we expect from our bikes. INTEGRATED HEADSET Integrated headsets are simple, light and effective headset systems whereby the bearing race cups are actually part of the head tube, and they are either machined away and left with the head tube, bonded (carbon), or welded in with steel or alloy. Like an internal headset, an integrated headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible. The extra air volume in this new generation of urban and mixed-surface tires means they can be run comfortably at lower pressures while still rolling quickly on a variety of surfaces. It's the best of both worlds.
The cream of the crop, the Libre CR DL leaves no stone…er piece of gravel unturned. This gorgeous Race Light Carbon frame provides both performance and comfort across varying terrain. The Libre CR DL features a Kona Verso Carbon fork and can carry a ton of gear via bento box mounts, 3-pack cage mounts, and numerous water bottle bosses. Bike packing not your thing? That's cool too because this bike hauls ass over gravel, pavement, or whatever you want to throw at it. Engage the dropper post to slay that nasty little section of singletrack. You can be sure the grippy 45c tires will have you covered. KONA CARBON Designed to be lightweight and built to demanding standards. Lighter, faster, better. That was Trek's goal in creating their best-of-the-best Madone 6.9. Handmade from OCLV2 carbon, the 6.9 is brutally efficient, ultra light and breaks the status quo with a tapered 1.5-inch headtube/fork combo that makes your front end super stiff for scalpel-like steering. Flowing down, the downtube joins with an insanely-stout 90mm-wide bottom bracket. This gives you the stiffest possible platform to launch attacks with every watt of your energy going to road. Perhaps the most ingenious piece on this bike is the integrated seatmast that reduces weight and smooths the road underneath you for sublime comfort. A frameset of this level deserves only the best and you get it with top-of-the-line Bontrager Aeolus carbon aero wheels, Shimano's Tour-winning Dura-Ace components and Bontrager Race XXX Lite stem and bars that add the finishing touches of class.

Steel Commuter and Gravel Bike Preamble is a hard-boiled steel commuter built for comfort, durability, and buffoonery on pavement and gravel. Nothing More is Needed. Nothing Less Will Do. The challenge was thus: Build a serious steel bike and give it only the attributes that matter most. Make it quick and comfortable on pavement, as well as confident and compliant on degraded surfaces. What the Enginerds put forth is Preamble, a pavement and gravel utility worker that proves you don't need to cut corners or clip coupons to make a more affordable steel bike. You just need to keep shit simple. Preamble can run racks and fenders and carry a couple water bottles. Surly was raised on stealing basic cable, after all. Smooth and efficient on asphalt, Preamble's double-butted main triangle provides a resplendent ride feel and withstands abuse from life's inevitable potholes. Make it your own with flat bars, drop bars, a basket, or bags. On the road to steel euphoria, Preamble is the gateway drug.
